What makes a password strong?

A strong password should be at least 12 characters long and include a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid common passwords and sequential characters like "abc" or "123".

What is password entropy?

Password entropy measures the unpredictability of a password in bits. Higher entropy means the password is harder to crack. It is calculated using the formula: length × log2(charset size). A password with 60+ bits of entropy is considered strong.

How is time to crack calculated?

Time to crack is estimated based on the password entropy and assumes an attacker can try 1 billion passwords per second using modern hardware. Stronger passwords take exponentially longer to crack. This is a theoretical estimate for brute-force attacks.

Is my password safe when using this tool?

Yes! All password analysis happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your password is never sent to any server or stored anywhere. You can even use this tool offline.

What are common passwords?

Common passwords are frequently used passwords like "password", "123456", or "qwerty". These are extremely easy to crack and should never be used. This tool checks against a list of the top 100 most common passwords.

How long should my password be?

We recommend at least 12 characters for basic security, and 16+ characters for maximum security. Longer passwords are exponentially harder to crack. A 16-character password with mixed character types can take trillions of years to crack.
