Frequently Asked Questions
What is an IP address lookup?
An IP address lookup is a service that retrieves geolocation and network information associated with an IP address, including location (country, city), ISP provider, timezone, and connection type.
Can I lookup IPv6 addresses?
Yes! This tool supports both IPv4 (e.g., 8.8.8.8) and IPv6 (e.g., 2001:4860:4860::8888) address formats. Simply enter either format and click Lookup.
Why can't I lookup private IP addresses?
Private IP addresses (10.x.x.x, 192.168.x.x, 172.16-31.x.x, 127.x.x.x) are only used within local networks and don't have public geolocation data. Only public IP addresses can be looked up.
How accurate is IP geolocation?
IP geolocation accuracy varies. Country-level data is typically 95%+ accurate, city-level is about 55-80% accurate. The exact coordinates may be approximate and represent the ISP's location rather than the precise device location.
Is my IP address lookup private?
When you lookup an IP address, the query is sent to a third-party API (ip-api.com). Your own IP address is only displayed if you use the 'Show My IP' feature. No data is stored by our tool.
What does IP type mean?
IP type indicates the connection category: Residential (home internet), Mobile (cellular network), Datacenter (hosting/cloud services), or Proxy/VPN (anonymization services). This helps identify the nature of the connection.
